Voices of Deakin

From our community, for our community
Voices of Deakin (VoD) is a group of residents seeking to create a better future for our community, and for the generations who follow us, through greater connection to and independent representation in Parliament.

We are volunteers from across the electorate of Deakin who believe in fairness, integrity and equality, and that independent representation in Parliament can achieve better outcomes for us all.
We believe government decision making and policy development should be centred around the collective good and be evidence-based, not determined by ideology, donors and lobbyists.

VoD’s purpose is to engage and listen to our community and encourage active participation in the democratic process. This will enable us to endorse a high-quality ‘community’ independent candidate that aligns with community values to run at the next federal election, and to hold our elected federal representative to account.

We respectfully acknowledge the Wurundjeri People of the Woi-wurrung Clan of the Kulin Nation, as the Traditional Owners of the land we live and work on in the Deakin electorate.

We recognise their enduring, continued connection to land, sea, sky and community, and acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded. We pay our respects to the courage, wisdom and resilience of Elders past, present and emerging.
Listening to the community
The success of the ‘Voices’ movement demonstrates that
democracy can be done differently, and done better.
Following the blueprint of the Community Independents Project, we have embarked on a journey to find a strong, independent candidate, who most of the community would be happy to stand behind at the next federal election.
This involves engaging with as many people as possible from the Deakin community through our Survey, Kitchen Table Conversations, door knocking, and other events and community engagement such as at train stations, shopping centres, festivals and markets.
